Nick-name: Fleet Eye. Its history began in 1944 as a replacement for the Dauntless (page 10). The first and most severe test,  however, came in the Korean conflict, where it reached notable successes. In Vietnam it distinguished itself for strength and variety of employments.
"It has broken more records, flown more combat sorties and cost less to operate than any other combat aicraft still in operational use............. To its pilots, crew and mechanics the Skyraider is affectionally dubbed "spAD" because of its seeming antiquity........It is leading the parade in the Vietnamese campaign............Notorious free of bugs........." (remarks in the magazine "Air Classics" from around 1970).
Admiral John Hoskins, Commander of Task Force 77,  said during the Korean action about the "Able Dog": "I'm convinced that the Douglas Skyraider is the best and most effective close support airplane in the world today. It will be a long time before anything comes along to beat it."

Bijnaam: Fleet Eye (Oog van de vloot). Het  vliegtuig begon in 1944 als vervanger van de Dauntless (pag.10). De eerste en zwaarste beproeving kreeg het in Korea, waar het belangrijke successen boekte. In Vietnam onderscheidde het zich door kracht en vele gebruiksmogelijkheden.

Admiraal John Hoskins, Commandant van Gevechtsgroep 77, zei tijdens de actie in Korea over de "Able Dog": "Ik ben er van overtuigd, dat de Douglas Skyraider het beste en het meest effectieve ondersteunende vliegtuig is in de wereld van vandaag. Het zal heel lang duren eer er iets komt, dat hem verbetert."
