When too many heavy American bombers did not return from their missions to Germany, the cries for fighters as escort grew louder. The P-47 was chosen, but its range was too limited. It had to return to base, when actually it  was most needed. Now the Mustang came into view. At first its performance was not very impressive; the Allison engine did not allow a good performance at high altitudes. But after installation of a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, success walked in.
The combination of speed, manoeuvrability and long range of the P-51 made it to one of the most valuable aircraft in Europe during the last two years of war.

Toen teveel zware Amerikaanse bommenwerpers niet terugkeerden van hun vluchten naar Duitsland, werd de roep om escorterende jagers sterker. De keuze viel op de P-47, maar die had een te beperkt bereik. Hij moest naar zijn basis terugkeren, juist wanneer hij het meest nodig was. Nu kwam de Mustang in beeld. Aanvankelijk waren zijn prestaties niet indrukwekkend; de Allison motor verhinderde een goede prestatie op grote hoogte. Maar na de inbouw van Rolls-Royce Merlin motoren kwam het succes.
De combinatie van snelheid, wendbaarheid en grote actieradius maakte de P-51 tot één van de meest waardevolle vliegtuigen in Europa tijdens de laatste twee oorlogsjaren.
