In February 1936 the prototype flew first. This machine had a 645hp Bristol Mercury engine. Very soon this engine was replaced by a 830hp Mercury VIII. The armament consisted of  four 7.9mm machine guns. Air Command ordered 36 planes. Finland was also interested and built      D 21s in license. In their war against the Russians they won many successes.
In May 1940, as the Germans invaded The Netherlands, the D-21s (and other available planes) defended their country.  Within 5 days they shot down many German aircraft,  although the German planes were far superior. The models shown belonged to 1e JAVA "De Kooy".

In de Finse oorlog tegen de Russen hadden ze veel succes.
In mei 1940, toen de Duitsers Nederland binnenvielen, verdedigden de D-21s samen met andere  vliegtuigen het land. In 5 dagen schoten ze veel Duitse toestellen neer, hoewel de Duitse vliegtuigen veel en veel beter waren. De getoonde modellen behoorden tot de 1e JAVA "De Kooy".
