Messerschmitt Me 321 Gigant (more than 1 picture/meer dan 1 foto)
| In november 1940 Messerschmitt
planned building a large freight glider, Me 321. It got the name
"Gigant" (Giant), and it was really big. It had a wing span of
55m, almost that of the Boeing 747. Could this thing fly? It could and
was able to carry tons of cargo. Problem was to find a tugging machine.
After a number of tryouts (with many accidents) the Heinkel 111 Zwilling
(Twin) should do the trick (see page 65). After having been tugged by this Heinkel it had a flying range of about 400 km, with a speed of 200 kmh. They wanted to use the Gigant in "Operation Hercules", against Malta, but that plan had to be cancelled. Transport of troops to the Russian oil fields and Stalingrad also failed. Building the Heinkel Zwilling took too much time. Apart from this problem, intermediate landings were often necessary due to the low flying range. This is why the Germans finally decided to develop a motorised version, the Me 323. But that is a different story and not exactly a successful one either.
