Piper Cub L-4 (more
than 1 picture/meer dan 1 foto)
| The Piper Cub descended from
the works of C.Gilbert Taylor, an Englishman who had moved to the USA (see
page 73, Taylorcraft Auster). The American William Piper acquired Taylor's
company, but Taylor stayed on as President and Chief Engineer until 1935.
The first Piper Cub (J-2) was in fact a modified Taylor design. In 1938 the J-3 appeared. It had a more powerful Continental 65 hp engine. From the J-3 a military model originated, designated as L-4 *Grasshopper".
The Pipers saw action for the
first time in the course of the Allied invasion in North Africa, and from
that time they served on all fronts. They were mainly used as reconnaissance
and observation aircraft. A total of 5.500 Pipers L-4 were built. De Pipers kwamen voor het
eerst in actie tijdens de Geallieerde invasie in Noord-Afrika en sindsdien
dienden ze op alle fronten. Ze werden voornamelijk gebruikt als verkennings-
en waarnemingsvliegtuigen. In totaal werden 5500 Pipers L-4 gebouwd.
