| The Pfeil (Arrow) was one
the most unusual fighter-bombers of the Third Reich, It most salient
characteristic was the tractor/pusher two-propeller combination, but the
cross-shaped tail and the forward positioned landing gear also contributed
to its unique appearance. Researching this twin engine layout was already
started in the 1920's. In 1937, Dornier obtained a design patent for the
front/rear engine and the cross-shaped tail layout. The arrangement with two engines mounted fore-and-aft in tandem had the advantage that there was less increased drag and reduced manoeuvrability compared to the situation of two engines, placed in the wings. Moreover, asymmetry problems due to failure of one of the engines would be eliminated. In the autumn of 1942, with detail design still progressing, Dornier were informed that the Do335 was no longer required as a bomber. In the light of the massive Allied air raids, it was to be redesigned as a multi-role fighter. But the end of WW II precluded its deployment and entry into real combat.
