| In 1958, NATO tried to find
a successor of the out-dated Lockheed Neptune for the anti-submarine role.
The Breguet BR. 1150 was awarded a contract. After its first flight on 21
October 1961, however, it took four more years before the first aircraft could be
delivered to France and Germany (December 1965). In 1968/9, the Dutch
Marine Luchtvaartdienst replaced their Neptunes by nine aircraft of the
new Atlantic type, serving with 321th Squadron (later redesignated to
320th Squadron). Although the Lockheed P-3 Orion seemed to be an
attractive choice, it was politically important that the new plane would
be European. By the way, in later years the Orion got its chance after all
and is up till now (2004) serving in the MLD. As for the Breguet, the Dutch Navy got the first one in June 1969. Eight more came and that is where the story ended. Different kinds of problems arose. Operationally the aircraft were satisfying, but there were too many accidents. In 1981 the Breguets even were grounded for a rather long period of time. 321th Squadron used the Breguet on Valkenburg Air Base until 1985. Then the remaining six aircraft went back to France.
