| The Otter is actually based
on the King Beaver, built by De Havilland Canada. Soon it was designated as
"Otter". Being longer and heavier than the original Beaver, this
sturdy airplane was a logical choice for the US Air Force, who
needed a larger utlity transport. It could carry a 2.000 lb. payload or 9
fully equipped special forces troops. The Otter had room for 10 - 12 "normal" passengers and as flying ambulance it could carry six stretchers and four passengers. It was called the "One-ton truck of the Air" and was very popular in South Vietnam. The US Army bought 240 U-1A aircraft. Originally the Otter was powered by a 600-hp Pratt & Whitney R-1340-SIHI-G Wasp radial oiston engine, Later upgrades included a turboprop, a lower empty weight of 3703 pounds and a maximum speed of 267 km/h. That version was called the Cox Turbo Single Otter. A number of other conversions was also offered. Versions on skis or floats served in Canada and Alaska.
